WHAT WE DO

Located in beautiful Highland County, Virginia, the Highland County Humane Society is dedicated to promoting health, safety, welfare, compassionate care, and protection of animals through a cooperative engagement with Highland County, its citizens, and other like-minded animal welfare groups.

Our Mission

We are a private, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting health, safety, welfare, compassionate care and protection of animals through a cooperative engagement with Highland County Virginia, its citizens, and other like-minded groups throughout the region.

Volunteer Community

We are a group of dedicated volunteers and foster homes taking unwanted animals from the public, the Highland County pound, and neighboring animal shelters. HCHS has no staff, nor physical building and has no boundaries. Our group consists of animal advocates, and each of us believes every animal deserves a loving home. Since forming in July 2012, HCHS has taken in over 3500 dogs, cats and other creatures.

HCHS is a recognized 501(c)3 organization and is completely funded through donations, private and corporate sponsors, adoption fees, and fund raising events. Your tax deductible donation provides day to day care, veterinary services, food, and shelter for the animals under our protection. Donations of pet food, cat litter, cleaning supplies, and gas cards are also appreciated.

Love stories-helping neighbors

Story by: Corena, HCHS founder

HCHS has a robust pet retention program. Helping our neighbors keep their pets happy and healthy. We cover spay/neuter surgeries, supply pet food,  offer veterinary funding assistance and deliver supplies. Pets give so much love, we’re happy to help them stay with their families.

What We've Achieved

  • More than 3500 dogs, cats, horses and other companion animals have entered our foster based, volunteer rescue since forming in July, 2012.

  • Those animals left our program healthy, spayed or neutered, and ready to be a good family pet or expert-mouser barn cat.

  • Thanks to you we were able to help over 1,000 additional animals through our community spay/neuter and Trap-Neuter-Return programs. Together we prevented hundreds of unplanned litters.

  • Free pet food and parasite control to our housebound folks and local families, transportation to the vet and groomer at no charge, humane education, bite prevention, straw for outdoor dogs and lending a helping hand wherever animal welfare is needed.
